Competitor gaps: what they rank for and you do not

How to find topics your competitors cover and you do not, and how to turn them into content.

Short answer

Competitor gap search collects the keywords your competitors appear for in search and you do not yet target — and then you can turn them straight into content. You can give up to five competitor domains, or leave it empty and let the system identify them from the results. Every gap comes with a search volume and a competition signal, so you pick the most rewarding rather than the most impressive. It is available on the Scale plan.

What is it for?

Topic research starts from what you supplied. Gap search comes from the other direction: it looks at what others in your market get traffic for, and what of that is missing from you. This is typically the easiest win in a content plan — questions people demonstrably search for, to which you have no answer.

How to use it

  1. Start it from the Studio

The Find competitor gaps button at the top of the Studio opens it.

  2. Give competitors — or do not

You can supply up to five domains, comma- or line-separated. Leave it empty and the system identifies from the results who your actual competitors are on those topics. The automatic identification is often more instructive: the competitor you have in mind commercially is not necessarily your competitor in search.

  3. Review the gaps

Every row is a keyword or topic area, with its search volume signal, the strength of competition (low, medium, high), and how many competitors are on it.

  4. Select what should become content

One by one or all at once. The selected gaps can be taken onwards into content production from here.

Which gap is worth picking?

VolumeCompetitionWorth it?
HighLowYes, first. Rare, but this is the best combination.
MediumLowYes. The professional long tail usually lives here, and this is where you can appear quickly.
HighHighCarefully. Large effort, and rarely winnable with one article.
LowAnythingOnly if it matters commercially — for example if it leads to a specific offer of yours.

What happens if I give no competitor?

The system identifies them from the results for your topics. That often gives a more accurate picture of who you actually compete with in search.

Why did it find no gaps?

Typically because the scope examined was too broad or too narrow. Try supplying specific competitor domains.

Is it available on a smaller plan?

No, competitor gap search is on the Scale plan. The full version of SEO/GEO research does include competitor and gap analysis as a one-off purchase, though.

Does it cost credits?

The analysis uses external data sources; the interface states it if credits are involved before the operation. Content produced from the gaps uses the usual 1 / 5 credits.
